Welcome from The Chairman- Anjulika Salhan
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to IMA’s first congress on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
At this congress you will have the opportunity to hear presentations on a variety of applications of AI ranging from Financial Technology, Medical Technology and Cyber Security to Climate Change and Defence. You will also engage in the ethical considerations of AI with an insight from the top legal firms looking at AI and the Exploitation of Intellectual Property Rights.
This congress is a unique gathering space where mathematicians, industry experts and practitioners will exchange ideas on single platform. This is one of the most striking features of this event and will highlight how diverse and broad the applications of AI are. Whilst we look the diversity and all-encompassing nature of the applications of AI, we cannot forget that Industry must implement AI with responsibility and at the same time, for Mathematicians, it is imperative to initiate work on the rigorous mathematical foundations of AI, which is currently at a young age.

Professor Nira Chamberlain OBE, AtkinsRéalis Technical Fellow for Mathematical Modelling
Gauss is Wrong! The Good, the Bad and the AI
Over recent years, if not longer, AI algorithms have come under more scrutinisation and criticism. A faceless complex black box technique that can sway elections, influence what you buy, tell you how you can live and predict A level student examination grades! AI algorithms touch every aspect of our lives including engineering projects. There is much talk about AI ethics but what can you do when rival companies/countries employ AI algorithms ruthlessly without any ethical consideration? In this talk, Prof Nira Chamberlain will present the challenges of AI both technically and culturally through research, personal experience and case studies.

Michael Ormond, Senior Science Communication Manager – Stryker
Michael has worked in the medical device industry for 25 years in research and development and scientific marketing roles, with a focus on procedural technology for joint replacement. Recently, Michael has pioneered the application of contemporary Science Communication (SciComm) principles with a special interest in communicating between high science-capital audiences. Additionally, Michael remains focused on academic work, specifically on acceptance and understanding of AI amongst orthopaedic surgeons.

Can you tell a mathematician from a fish?
Data based machine learning is one of the fastest growing areas of AI based modern technology, which is having a transformative impact on all areas of our lives from medicine and weather forecasting, to finance, education, and justice systems
However, alongside this explosive growth are concerns about a lack of understanding, and trust behind the way that machines makes decisions. Would you trust an AI algorithm to make a judicial judgment, forecast the weather, give a medical diagnosis, or design an aircraft, purely based on possibly biased past data and with no other scientific support? Also, how can we tell when an algorithm has not been misused, to create a fake image, for example turning a mathematician into a fish.
In this talk I will demonstrate that mathematics is possibly the best tool to understand the power, and limitations, of such algorithms, and to consider what the best future use of them might be. For example mathematics can be used to detect the biases in the training of an algorithm used in the justice system, make an AI based medical diagnosis more reliable, use machine learning to solve (sometimes) a differential equation to give a weather forecast, and tell whether an image has been faked or not. Indeed it may even be possible, using the ideas in this talk, to tell the difference between a mathematician and a fish.
Helen Whiteman, Chief Executive, Chartered Institute of Taxation
The future of tax is digital: AI in tax technology
Helen Whiteman joined the CIOT in September 2019 from legal regulator, CILEx Regulation where she was CEO since 2015. She studied Law at De Montfort University, before undertaking a Masters in IT at the University of Warwick, as well as successfully completing the Oxford Said Artificial Intelligence Programme. Helen is a volunteer trustee for Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford, London and ecobirmingham. She is a Champion and former trustee of the legal mental health and wellbeing charity, LawCare, and is also a Mental Health First Aider
Mini Symposium –
We are now opening the call for mini symposiums giving you the opportunity to organise your own session. A mini symposium consists of 3 or 4, 20 minute talks on a relevant topic of choice. You would be responsible for finding/organising your mini symposium session and bringing together your session. If you are interested in holding a mini symposium then please fill out this form with a 300 word abstract and title on your Mini symposium.

Submit an abstract (max 300 words. This should include your main ideas and results, their context and appropriate references. Abstracts should be submitted through your MyIMA account. You do NOT have to be a member to submit an abstract, If you would like to submit an abstract then please register for FREE and upload your abstract to the event on the portal.
Prizes
System Holdings Student Prize – There will be two prizes up for grabs for the best oral student presentations! First place prize £750.00 and Runner up prize – £250.00. Prizes will be presented to the winner on the afternoon of the last day.
Competition
Calling all schools in Birmingham! We will be holding a Student competition on a full TensorFlow working programme to predict financial time-series. Full details for the competition Instructions for teachers are here – https://github.com/IMA-ProfLynch/IMA-AI-ML-Workshop/blob/main/Predicting_Financial_Time_Series.ipynb . The problem will be released to schools involved on the 25th June and the closing date for the competition is the 12th July 2024. Teachers will be required to mark their students work; full guidelines will be provided.
We will be holding our Python workshop on the 28th & 29th of June 2024. Students wishing to take part in the competition will receive a FREE space. Please ask your teachers to contact us prior at conferences@ima.org.uk
The competition is targeted at AS-Level Mathematics.
The Python workshop will be online for one day, either Friday 10am-4pm or Saturday 10am-4pm
What software / libraries will students need to have access to in order to complete the competition (and complete the workshop) Google Colab – no software on the computer. Pupils will need a Google account.
If your students are interested in taking part please email at conferences@ima.org.uk us saying how many students will be taking part in the competition. The Winners will be able to attend the conference to pick up their prize.
